Best DC Comics Characters Mike Mignola Should Draw

Dec 28, 2023

After illustrating Gotham by Gaslight and creating Hellboy, Mike Mignola should return to DC Comics to draw even more iconic superheroes.

Mike Mignola practiced his hand at Marvel and DC Comics, busting out stories like Cosmic Odyssey, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, and many more. Afterwords, Mignola hit it big in the '90s with Hellboy, gaining popularity and acclaim with his creation. Mignola birthed an entire universe around Hellboy, peopling it with heroes, horrors, and everything in between, but there are some characters who would benefit greatly from his artistic skill.

Mignola can write his own check nowadays, and it's doubtful he'll return to the Big Two. However, Mignola has plenty of amazing art opportunities at DC especially, illustrating iconic characters he's never drawn before.

Wally West is the current Flash, using his mastery of the Speed Force to protect Central City, Keystone City, and the world. The Flash is a venerable institution in DC history; there has always been a Flash, and fans love his adventures.

Mignola isn't a straight-up superhero artist. He gravitates toward the horror, rather than the sc-fi. However, seeing how he handles the visual language of the Flash, with lightning and Speed Force energy littering the page, would be interesting. Plus, Wally's more blue collar feel would come to life under Mignola's pencil.

Etrigan was created by Jack Kirby when he came to DC. Since then, the Demon has been in a variety of tales, his position as a rhymer in Hell's order making him an enemy and ally to the heroes of the Earth. Etrigan hasn't had his own solo series in a long time, but if there is anyone that can readers interested in the Demon again, it would be Mignola.

Etrigan is right up Mignola's alley. It's an obvious choice. Mignola's art style has always had shades of Kirby. Hellboy looks demonic, so Mignola could capture Etrigan's demonic world and presence perfectly.

Wonder Woman and Mike Mignola are a perfect match. Stories about warriors with hearts of gold battling the worst threats are exactly what made Mignola a star. The artist gives readers hard-hitting action, with amazing monster designs and understated details. Seeing Mignola released on Wonder Woman and Themyscira would be great for fans.

Some artists are born to draw characters but never get much of a chance to. Mignola has been Wonder Woman-adjacent for a long time. Whether it be a romp through Greek mythology or something more superhero-inspired, Mignola would do wonders with Wonder Woman.

Swamp Thing is the champion of the Green, and has starred in many of the greatest horror comics ever. It's honestly surprising that Mignola never got to spend any time drawing Swamp Thing, and seeing the artist get a chance to finally do so would be great. Swamp Thing would be a chance for Mignola to let loose on the greatest swamp monster in comics.

Swamp Thing comics aren't just monster fights, and seeing Mignola tap into the raw emotion of the character's world, as well as maybe some hallucinogenic trips to the Green, would be grand.

The Spectre is an occult powerhouse, having first appeared as a member of the Justice Society. Since then, the Spirit of Vengeance has been punishing evildoers and facing off against threats like the Anti-Monitor. The Spectre works best when he's using his reality-altering powers to creatively punish the sinners.

Mignola drawing the Spectre would be amazing. If there's anyone who could capture the unnerving menace of the Spectre in all its glory, it's Mike Mignola. Spectre's otherworldly powers, illustrated by Mignola, would be mind-boggling.

Mike Mignola got to draw Doctor Strange over at Marvel, so drawing DC's Doctor Fate only seems fair. Doctor Fate is a supernatural DC heavyweight, powered by the Lord of Order Nabu. He's been around since the Golden Age, battling evil alongside the Justice Society and the Justice League.

Mignola drawing battles between demons, monsters, and the biggest magical threats the DC multiverse has would be brilliant. The magical side of DC has always been an amazing playground, so Mignola on Fate would be a smorgasbord of awesomeness.

Lucifer Morningstar is a mythological force older than stars, but not stories. The enemy of God, Lucifer led a rebellion and was cast down into Hell. For years, he resided over the damned, but decided that he wanted to live his own life and left Hell. Since then, he's ran a nightclub and created a universe of his own, and has done it with a style and flair that few could match.

Fans loved Lucifer's adventures through his several solo series. Mignola drawing Lucifer for an adventure would be a joy to behold. Whether it be while he was still monarch of Hell or his later life, Mignola's Lucifer would definitely be the best looking.

Alan Scott is another venerable part of DC history. The first Green Lantern has battled villains for decades and has become an elder statesman of the hero community. His adventures have taken him through WWII, multiverse-shaking crises, and throughout the past, present, and future alongside the Justice Society

Alan Scott mixes magic and sci-fi, and he's right up Mignola's alley. His style has a classic feel that would fit Scott's Golden Age world well. Mignola would bring Scott to life in a way no other artist has in years.

The Sandman universe is a collective masterpiece. Fans praise Neil Gaiman writing, but many of the best artists from across the comic industry lent their talents to these books. Mignola was busy with Hellboy stories during the book's rise, but he's definitely an artist who fans would have loved to see draw Dream.

Mignola doing a Sandman story is the kind of lost chance that can be remedied. Mignola teaming up with Gaiman or even writing the story himself would give readers something they've only imagined. It's a match like few others, and Mignola would create a spectacularly eerie addition to this universe.

Zatanna is the Justice League's premiere magic user, and has long been a leader among the magical heroes of the Justice League Dark. She's defended the world from all manner of magical beast, and is another character that is right up Mignola's alley.

Picture Zatanna trudging through the Eastern European countryside, hunting down a magically summoned creature. That's pure Mignola storytelling. He's perfect for bringing Zatanna's magical adventures to life, adding a layer of gothic horror to her existing supernatural world.
