High school baseball: North Ridgeville, Elyria Catholic, Keystone among leaders in All

Dec 23, 2023

The 2023 All-Lorain County baseball teams have been announced, and there are a number of familiar faces filling out the lists.

In Division I, the first team distribution was fairly similar to a year ago, with North Ridgeville leading the pack with four players, followed by three each for Amherst, Midview and Avon Lake. Avon and Lorain each put one player on the All-County first team.

Amherst's Martin Polonkay is the Division I Player of the Year. North Ridgeville's Matt Ponting took home top coaching honors after breaking a 41-year conference title drought and advancing to the school's first district appearance since at least 1979, winning 19 games in the process with a senior-heavy group that won 20 games the year before.

Aside from earning Division I Player of the Year honors for the county, Polonkay was listed as a first-team pitcher. He led the team in several offensive categories while serving as part of a three-headed monster in Amherst's rotation with Chase Mayer and Cam Gendics.

In Division II, Elyria Catholic's Levi Ellis and Firelands’ Cory Ransom split Player of the Year honors. The Panthers lapped the field with five first-team players, followed by three for Vermilion and two each for Firelands and Brookside.

Elyria Catholic's Bruce Lisicky earned Coach of the Year after taking the Panthers to another district final and picking up his 200th career win.

Looking at Divisions III and IV, Keystone's Brock Miller and Bert Fitzgerald won Player and Coach of the year honors, respectively. Miller was one of three first-teamers for the combined Division III and IV list, with Open Door and Wellington also posting three players each. Clearview landed two players with Columbia and Oberlin each getting one nod each.

Miller was one of the county leaders in strikeouts, but was also a hit machine with All-Ohioan Jack Sivec in the Wildcats’ lineup.

Fitzgerald's squad made a big jump from last year, with the Wildcats falling just shy of their first district appearance since 2019 in a walk-off at Independence in a razor-close contest.
