These 5 Pa. burger spots among the best in the nation, according to Yelp

Jun 23, 2023

Pennsylvania might be home to chicken pot pie and scrapple, but it apparently also has some amazing burger places.

Five restaurants in the Keystone State recently made "Yelp's Top 100 Burgers in America" list for 2023.

Yelp compiled its list through rankings and reviews, noting burgers are one of the most searched foods on its site. This year, Yelp said its list suggests diners are gravitating toward more unconventional burgers.

"You’ll find choices for every burger type and taste, from fast-food faves and juicy diner classics to outrageous stack-ups at the latest pop-up joints—and a host of international mashups, too.," Yelp wrote.

Coming in at the top of the list is Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q in Atlanta followed by Minetta Tavern in New York and Slutty Vegan in Atlanta. Here's which restaurants made the cut in Pa.:

No. 17: Peppi's in Pittsburgh

At Peppi's three locations in Pittsburgh, the burgers look like hoagies and that's OK.

"Their big, filling burgers are served on Italian bread baked fresh everyday at nearby Mancini's Bread Company," according to Yelp.

Peppi's has been around since 1983 and operates under the moniker "Olde Thyme Sandwich Shoppe."

The menu lists favorites including the Roethlis"burger" named after former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as well as standards including bacon cheeseburger and mushroom Swiss. The restaurant is also known for its salads, subs and fresh cut fries.

No. 27: HipCityVeg in Philadelphia

This 100% vegan restaurant serves unconventional burgers as well as vegan versions of comfort foods.

Nicole Marquis opened the first unit in Philadelphia in 2012 and has expanded beyond the City of Brotherly Love to Washington, D.C.

The menu features gourmet burgers including The Ziggy, a bacon cheeseburger with provolone, organic tempeh bacon, lettuce, onion, pickle and special sauce on a toasted bun, and the Philly Cheesesteak with grilled steak, maitake mushrooms, grilled onion, mozzarella cheese and hot chili ketchup on a long roll.

"If you haven't been to hipcityveg get here asap omg! You can't even tell it's vegan food it's that good!! The staff was so freaking nice and the ambiance is very cute," wrote Yelper Sarah S.

No. 43: Food 101 in Gettysburg

Located on Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg, Food 101 is one of those hidden gems.

"We hit the jackpot with Food 101," wrote Yelper Maggi R. "Our compliments to the Chef. The food is just sooo good. You could taste fresh, high-quality ingredients in every dish that came out of the kitchen - and the care that went into them."

Food 101 is not a straight-up burger joint as pizzas, sandwiches and salads make up the bulk of the menu. But an 8-ounce Angus beef/brisket combo burger topped with caramelized onions, roasted garlic aioli and applewood smoked bacon on a brioche roll is a memorable choice.

"Nice surprise. Nothing fancy inside. Burger is the best I may have ever had. Definitely would recommend!," wrote reviewer Laura G.

No. 75: Bubblefish in Philadelphia

Another unconventional stop for a burger is Bubblefish, a Japanese spot in Philadelphia.

While bubble tea and sushi are the specialties, Bubblefish serves a signature sushi burger.

The creation is made with sushi rice acting as a the bun and Hawaiian tuna chopped and mixed with spicy mayonnaise to replicate a patty. There's also spicy snow crab, fresh avocado, fried onions, a slew of sauces and of course, seaweed.

"This dish is a game changer! I don't want to neglect the hand rolls I enjoyed as well; they were just fine! However, that tuna burger was the star of the show for me." wrote reviewer Roy C.

No. 94: The Burgery Company in Emmaus

The one-time standalone burger joint in Emmaus merged several years ago with the nearby House & Barn.

That's where diners can stop for dozens of burgers including elk, bison and venison options as well as beef burgers including an original with American cheese, Grizzly with pineapple, bacon, pepper jack cheese and teriyaki; and Blue Devil with bleu cheese, sauteed onions, bacon and roasted tomatoes.

The goal at the Burgery is to put a "twist on an American original."

"Friendly staff and ample seating. Cool outdoor dining area as well in the back. Plenty of interesting burger options to choose from. Outstanding burger, cooked to order perfectly. Highly recommend, will be back! " wrote reviewer Andrew S.
